Diet Coke has the same \"water value\" as water?!

I have heard recently that "to your body", Diet Coke has the same water value as water itself; i.e. 12oz of DC is exactly equal to 12oz of water. And that your body knows no different; if you drank Diet Coke (presuming you could stand the taste) instead of water for the rest of your life you would have no adverse effects on your body.

I call bullshit on this - I don't see how that can be possible. Anyone heard the same? MOJO? (BTW, did you get my PM?)

By no adverse effects I am guessing that they mean as far as hydration is concerned. Not drinking DC for 60 years has no adverse effects. Since it is mostly water, I would say the hydration value is similar, I doubt the difference would be statistically significant. Are there adverse effects? Yeah you are loading on the carbs for one thing.

How can you be loading on carbs? If I remember correctly diet Coke has 1 calorie. You can only have so many Carbs, Fats, and Proteins in a calorie. I think it is(Sorry if I am slightly off)

1 calorie of fat = 8 grams of fat
1 calorie of protein = 7 grams of fat
1 calorie of carbs = 5 grams of fat

Fats proteins and carbs are forms of fuel with different amounts of energy in them, a calorie is an expression of energy(I am being simplistic)

So at a few grams of Carbs per Diet coke, I don't get how that is loading, Would you not get more carbs from eating 5 croutons a day than drinking 5 diet cokes?

Sorry Nate I was thinking regular soda. I never drink diet cola so I was picturing a can of regular pepsi. I have no idea what the nutrional value panel looks like on a can of diet soda. Either way the artificiall sweeteners have side effects.

I can't drink Coke products for this reason. If you can use it in your car or to clean the acid off your battery it has no business going in my stomach.

Sounds like an old wive's tale. Somebody looked at one aspect of the two drinks and concluded there was no difference. I drink DC. They are not the same and do not have equal value. For example, if I drink lotsa water I take a shit. If I drink losta DC I get hearburn, no shit.

There is also a misconception that drinking diet soft drinks don't add weight because of only one calorie. They may not add weight directly but indirectly they don't satisfy any hunger urges, in fact they make me hungrier. Hence, added weight. Soft drinks also probably cause physio-chemical (if that's a word) actions that slow the metabolism.

Actually, the acids found in your stomach used to break down foods are far more acidic that diet soda.

The only potential adverse affects are caffeine and the sugar substitute used (some have no caffeine). The adverse affects of most sugar substitutes is virtually nil, as long as you don't consume MASSIVE quantities (say 10 gallons every day). The newest substitute, splenda, is actually a sugar derivative, which is spozed to have even less adverse affects.

I've heard that the carbonation robs the blood supply of oxygen.

Just what I heard.

Chuck, that's pretty much what I was thinking, but City makes some good points too. I just have a hard time thinking you can be just as hydrated drinking DC as water.

DC is water. The liquid in the can isnt coming from anything else really. Its the additives to the water that cause the harm. So as far as hydration I would say its the same if not close.

Re: Diet Coke has the same \"water value\" as water?!

Why wouldnt' it. Just because something else is dissolved in water it doesn't have the same end product to your body? Your body breaks it down.

How many people, honestly, do you know that drink PLAIN water? Most people get it from milk, soda, beer, etc.

12 oz water = 12 oz water, whether it's in OJ, Fruits, Beans, Soda, etc.

But, nonetheless, nothing beats plain ol' water.

Perhaps in the bodies' process of breaking it down it can't do it efficiently enough without "plain" water. I'm no nutritionalist, but this would seem right to me.
