It seems that we all have been having bad times lately
As some may know, it looks all to real that my marriage of 8 years is coming to a close. On top of that I have been having an issue with vertigo (unexplained dizziness). I just took a sleep study, and did an MRI, as the vertigo was bad enough to have me barfing at times.
There is nothing abnormal in the brain, that the MRI found(both with and without contrast). And it would seem the sleep study is going to recommend surgery.
Taking this into consideration, and adding the proceeds from the sale of my home, and some other items, I am at a crossroads.
I know I don't want another home with a lawn and shit, so that leads me to a condo, or to buy a slip and live on boat near the seacoast. If some know the area of New England, I work in Maynard, about one hour drive north west of Boston.
My commute to work now is 1 to 1.5 hours. If I do the boat, it would increase the drive time to two hours. If I do the condo, it will vary form 30 minutes to stay the same as it is now. I am trying not to have to put up with dealing with a pool, the lawn, woos stoves, (a wife), etc.
What do the guys think?
and what do the ladies think? would you date a guy who lives on a sailboat or Catamaran. these are the two boats I have in mind.

How old are you? My Dad has had vertigo just as you explained. It comes and goes and it seems like it has passed. The doctors claim there are some sort of crystals in the ear causing it. Not serious really, but a real bother. Whatever you do don't let them cut on you without getting the opinions of 100 doctors. Doctors are always willing to take a knife to someone and frequently do more harm than good.

41 yo
the knife is for the snoring, I can rattle the roof off of any house, even Getbit's. I stayed at a Ho-Jo once in FLA gulf coast. Built in the 60's, it has a rotating roof restaurant. I was getting complaints from all rooms surrounding mine. (Including above and below)
the trouble is the vertigo has me hesitant on taking the motorcycle out. In a car I am protected, the Cavalcade, doesn't.

My Dad had vertigo before he passed away, kept him from enjoying a full life the last two years. Ironically he was experiencing a lot of improvement before he died, primarily from getting sufficient hydration. Before I suggested this and he began drinking tons of water he just drank coffee, milk and scotch (one or two drinks per day). He had gone from taking 16 pills per day to just a baby aspirin; was feeling much better. Most people don't drink enough water. Have you considered this possibility?

Arthur,
Trust me when I tell you that things WILL get better. I know, been there. Divorce is always nasty and will consume you if you let it so DON'T. The boat looks great but when you think about a 2 hr drive each way to work during one of your New England winters - don't leave much time to enjoy being single. How do you live on a boat in the winter ? I imagine you pull it out of the water but after that I'm lost. There's another thing you will find out after becoming free and that is there is no shortage of available women. Sample them until you find one or two that fit into YOUR lifestyle. I think your sleeping problem will fade after your away from what is causing it and the whole mess is done and over. Another plus for the condo is a garage for your Viper when you get it. Just think of the time you would save washing the Seagull shit off your car. You might consider talking to a shrink that earned a PHD. They have heard it all, are unbiased, and are a great outlet for letting off steam. I'll be there for you if you need me. Pete

First of all, screw the current 3 hour commute rount trip commute. Even if you work just the standard 8 hour workday with the one hour lunch, that means youre gone 12 hours of the day "at work". Thats ridiculous. No location is worth that. Remember, a house is just a posession that gives you a place to live. If you want to do the boat thing, and it truly is your dream do it, but remember that your spdingin the equivalent of 50% of a work day COMMUTING. That IMO isnt worth it. Wouldnt you rather live closer and have a boat somewhere else? If you want to do a condo/townhouse with a zero lot-line, do it, no lawn/maintenance. and it gives you all the maintenance free NICE roofed atmosphere you need.

Smokin is dispensing sage advice. Let me get things back off-track.
Can you do what you do in some other location? Do you have enough time vested for pension/retirement benefits that you wouldn't want to leave? In other words, is there a way you could move to a more boat-friendly locale without impacting yourself financially. Divorces are a good time to mix things up and try new things.

Not if I wish to remain employed in the same company. In my field we have little or no competition(or at least we have over 70% of the market currently). I enjoy what I do, and the co has given me an assurance that I have a position here has long as I want it.
I was thinking of attempting a condo close to here(work), then looking into a mooring with a friend. (Who happens to be my ENT specialist) He too is a boater, and we are trying trying to get his Luhrs running after 8 years on hard. (Starter is rusted frozen)
And boats end up to be money pits that float.

I have spent quite a bit of time on sailboats of all sizes. The liveaboard thing sounds good untill you run out of space. Get a cheap room or apartment in town , a storage unit for your stuff and buy a used boat that you will not lose your ass on. Remember a large sailboat will require crew that you can count on. Spend your weekends on the yacht and the week in town. When you retire look at living full time on the water on your dream boat. (my 2 cents)

I used to live on board my 37' Cruiser. But I always had a house or apartment to keep my stuff in.
Min, you are going to want a storage facility. Living on board is great. But size is everything. Don't kid yourself about the sailboat. If it is home, your not going to be as inclined to take her out with a bunch of people on board.
Buy a cruiser. Or if short on funds get an intercoastal cruiser (IE: Big Houseboat) Houseboats are ugly. But they are faster than cruisers and get better MPG. They also offer a larger living space and better amenities for living on board.

But houseboats don't play well with new englnad winters. I can live on the sailboat in the winter on the water. (you put a bubbler under the boat to keep the water moving)
But you do give me an idea, I think I'm going to look for a condo in the 155 range in NH(That lets me keep the CWP out of MA hands, also I can legally own the AR-10T I want). Ill look for a used sailboat that I can get for short money and work on slowly in a family members backyard.
and after a year, start working on the Capt license. That means in 4-5 years the 'Viperalley Winter Fuck Off' get away from the cold will be in the islands with a few captains in charge of a several boats.
And if I keep the scuba cert, I can finish teaching anyone who has completed the class work already

I too have my share of troubles lately with the wife almost dead of cancer & my work being much harder without her to help. All this added along with more bills than most people have ever seen in two lifetimes makes a person re-evaluate ones self.
I say what ever you do, plan it through but do what makes you happy.
The hard part for me is trying to decide what I want to do. A new life of some sort could be an adventure. I could grow from all this, but what would I do differently if had to do over?
At least being able to can ask ourselves these questions is a good thing.
This could be a chance for us to do something of greatness in some way.
Good luck in what ever you do.
