I actually looked into it in case I ever get really stinking rich.
Some highlights...
-They usually have a water tower that collects rain water for your use
-Electricity is usually through a gas or kerosene (or whatever) generator
-Many of the islands for sale have PEOPLE living on them. I dunno how that works... do you become king or what?
-You really need a year-round staff or at least security if you ain't living there all the time
-They are not as expensive as you think! I found some islands in the Caribbean for well under $1MM. Costa Rica has some nice places, and there are some nice islands in the Australia/Fiji/Phillippines area too.
Check that site out - some awesome places. If I ever buy one I'm gonna throw a huge party and SoCal, you are the guest of honor (as long as you bring chicks)

OK I dont get this part. If you can buy the island then its already privately owned and you are buying from the previous owner, right? So how are people living on private property.

Mago island in Fiji. It has 35 residents, and it says they are employees of the owner or family of his employees. There are also 400 head of cattle, 300 goats, 16 horses, pigs, and other fauna
I guess you could fire the people and evict them from the island, but you would have to be a tremendous cockbite to do that.
The price is pretty reasonable. $15 million for over 5400 acres of tropical island. It has its own interior plain, permiter lagoon, an interior lagoon, 670 foot cliffs on the eastern shore, and natural coconut, guava, papaya, and mangos.
That place frickin rocks... and $15MM isn't that much for 5400 acres, 14 homes, a couple of lagoons and all that. And I doubt it's going to depreciate.
I seriously would love to buy an island sometime - the biggest problem has to be that its a money pit, unless you have no house there (then who cares if people come and camp and stuff), but as soon as you have a home, you need security which means payroll.
Buy the Island and declare war against the US. Let them bomb you for a couple of day's and surrender. After the war the US will step in and rebuild with all the latest amenities. It's worked for other countries that we have been at war with.
The US has a great rebuilding program.
Better yet; buy the island, become your own country, apply for diplomatic status and plates in the States, drive your Viper at 180mph whenever you want, tell cops to go fuck themselves.

You probably want to keep the people on as staff for $1/day to take car of all those animals, etc.

$1/day???? PHILANTROPIST!
How about "work free, and I won't boot you... you eat whatever you can catch"
Was just thinking about that...what will keep someone from going in there and just taking it? Do you need to set up your own govt or something? I got a big enough family to own a island...maybe I should look into it. Maybe the Phili...my wife is filipino...
