Thanks Barbara ... these babies are like family members so just a quick rundown for your interest if you wish to indulge me. If not don't read any further:
1.) the one on the left side (on the couch) was built by Roger Sadowsky in NYC, Roger does all of Will Lee's, Tom Hamilton (Aerosmith's) and many others, this is a clone of '77 jazz that he did for Marcus Miller in the early 80's. Marcus is perhaps the best slap funk jazz player in the business today. The bass is a southern swamp ash body with maple neck and fingerboard and mother of toilet seat (pearl) block inlay on the fingerboard. It has a 3 band eq and hot preamp and is THE funkmonster especial! It is the slappiest funker going, I abuse it terribly, it takes a licking and keeps on ticking!
2.) Right side (on couch) is a brand spanking new fretless bass built by Ken Lawrence in Arcata Cali. Ken builds for Vic Wooten (Bela and the Flecktones) who is a fabulous player. Ken is a great session player in his own right. The body is Honduran Mahogany rescued from a 100 plus year old church in Norcal the church was being torn down. Oh yeah .. we like "OLD WOOD"!! and its now the body of my bass! The bass is chambered, a very thin slice off the top (like a 100ths) is removed before carving and chambering is complete. The top is replaced with a very very resonant sitka spruce (like on a fine fine flatop or carved arched-top guitar). The fingerboard is gaboon ebony with matching headstock and bridge for the strangs. It has a piezo (acoustic) pickup in the bridge as well as a humbucker (dual coil) pick up routed to the body. Its like a chorus of heavingly angels and when I wire it to my Roland V Bass box it sounds like a horn symphony, it's totally choral sounding..
3.) Far left on the floor is a fretless four string "Human" bass made in Germany by Ziggy Jaeger. The top is a highly figured birdeye maple, back is eastern Europe (lightweight) clear maple with an ebony fingerboard. The body is stylized/shaped to feel like your best girl friend when it hugs up against you, hence the name "Human". It is delightful to play!
4.) My Mary Kay (white) John Suhr swamp ash strat is just awesome. Can you say fender strat on roids! Watch out Stevie Ray! NOT! John is a great builder and to this day the highest ranking masterbuilder ever at Fender's custom shop. John raised Fender status significantly when he started building all of Clapton's guitars. Mark Knofler aka sultan of swing also uses John's Pensa/Suhr guitars. John is a fine fine guy and lives Lake Elsinore Cali.
5.) Ahh yes, my Rick Turner Lindsey Buckingham bass. Not many of these babies to be found. Rick built all of the Dead guitars, Jack Cassidy (Jeff Airplane) stuff etc. Rick is very colorful guy. This guitar has bent Indian Rosewood facings and back.... purty!! Morado fretboard, Spanish Cedar neck, western cedar body sandwiched between the Rosewood and killer Turner electronics! I use this to play Stanley Clark stuff since Stanley plays a short scale (30") bass, I wish I was half as good as Stanley! It is extremely lightweight and resonant .. a prized possession. When Lindsey was on the last Mac tour, I had a hell of a time getting Rick's attention to complete this bass! Since Mac was tearing it up everywhere and Lindsey was fucking up guitars as fast as he could play them he took major priority over the completion of my bass, fucKING Lindsey!! lol's!!
6.) Tom Anderson .. my beloved Tom with a Pat Wilkins tobacco fade finish. Tom is in the San Fernando valley and builds about 1200 guitars per year to the tune of $3-5k each. Can you say "nice work Tom!" Tom is a super guy and you'll see his guitars strapped to great players everywhere, Brad Whitmore, Chris Cross, Ritchie Sambora, the list goes on and on .. This one is all mahogany (neck and body) with old P90 pickups just like the ones in 50's Gibson. It's a shorter scale guitar so the mid range sound is gangbuster (like 10 guitars). It fills the middle rythmn section quite well ..
That's all folks. Not only do I enjoy playing these babies but theyre so damn purty I like to look at them too! Brings new meaning to "good wood". That is all of the "guitar porn" for today!
