I am looking into a tow vehicle and set my sights on either a F-250 Trition V-10 or an F-350 V-10 or powerstoke diesel. I am going with the Fords mainly because of the low prices of the fods vs. Chevy or Dodge. Anybody have experience with the Ford V-10? I can possibly pick up a 1999 F-350 ($11,500) with a powerstroke, but it has 200K, BUT it has a new tranny. What do y'all think?
Tow ratings are higher with a stick but I doubt you should have to worry about that. Diesels should be good for 400K miles before a major overhaul. Yes teh gas mileage difference would be staggering if you are towing when comparing a gas engine to a diesel.
The fords have a really low geared rear with the v-10, really bad gas mileage!!!!
I've had a 5 speed in my v-10 dodge for well over 100k in mileage,, best towing truck I ever had!!!!!

My Dodge has always gotten 10 miles to the gallon uphill, downhill, buckin' the wind, tailwind, it didn't matter!!!! Best I got was 14 mpg empty. Best fuckin' truck I've ever had, no problems what-so-ever!!!!! got about 125k on it now. Wish all trucks were this good.
p.s. I just don't like the diesel smell, spill that shit on ya fillin it up and it's on ya for a week!!!!!
Is the gas mileage that much different? I am worried about the 200,000 miles on the diesel.
200k on a diesel isn't really that bad if you consider that some company's offer a 500k warranty on the motor alone. Something to check into or maybe someone could answer that for you here. Prices aren't really that different from a Ford to a Dodge diesel. As for my opinion a Cummings is A LOT better diesel than the Power stroke Ford but again thats only my two cents. Example I bought a 99' Quad Cab 1 ton 4 x 4 Dodge a few months back. Truck had 120k on it with a new clutch and pressure plate. Fuel had been turned up and had an aftermarket exhaust. Truck would pull a house of it's foundation. I gave 11,500 for it at auction. Just an example of course. But to answer your question 200k would not scare me at all.
as for the Cummins 5.9 - the full Banks upgrade takes them to around 450hp and 900ft/lb torque!!!!! Plus they have clean emissions and will still get 20mpg. For towing - there is no comparison - double the mileage and double the torque!

If anybody know of a deal like this on a 99 Dodge or Ford, let me know please. I can fit this into the budget
