Okay, the other week I was raving about my new Dell 22" monitor. I run it at 1600x1200/85Hz. Problem is - when I turn away from the monitor my eyes have trouble adjusting (spotty vision, blurry)! I cannot read alot of things (clock, paper, etc) and it takes my eyes a while to adjust to not looking at the screen. I even went out and bought one of the ATI 9500 Pro cards to get the best refresh rate I could get.
I never had this problem with my 19" running at 1280x1024/85Hz - but now I'm getting headaches and shit.
Looking at the 19" and 22", the text and icons are all about the same size.
I easily spend 8-10 hours a day at this screen. If this is what I have to look forward to, I'm getting rid of it.
Get a flatscreen. There is no refresh rate on them vs. a CRT and you'll have your eyesight preserved for years to come. CRT's makes your eyes go bad over time (particularly if you are running interlaced mode).
I've noticed that same problem with my vision as well. I use a flat screen monitor but not as big as the screen you use. I noticed that other day that I was haveing a hard time adjusting to things that were far away. I've had perfect vision forever!
Well, I've always had great vision (36) and dont think I need glasses - especially since it's started with the new monitor.
I wonder if there is a connection between these large screens, the refresh rate and high resoutions and fatigue from looking at these screens for long periods of time.
I think I will try moving it back a bit a bit and see what happens.
LOL. Yeah, I was always looking at my screen and having to refocus. So I went to the drug store and bought a couple $10 reading glasses, low power. It sucks but I don't need to wear them all the time. Just certain times of the day when my eyes won't focus real well.
I just got glasses to use in front of the computer (32) and it makes a world of a difference. My eye doctor told me to get away from CRT's as they are more straineous on the eyes than LCD displays. Size is important though, a small LCD won't be useful as they will strain the eyes anyway.
I got a 19" LCD at home at i definately feel less tired after a session in front of it vs. at work where i have a 21" CRT.
I was having troubles with my eyes a while back, so I went and got tested.
Turns out, that I only blink about 1/8th of the amount that I should. My eyes would dry up, and become blurry. Doc said computer use does that. Try some wet greasy drops in your eyes.
I've been staring at 19, 20, and 21 inch monitors for about 17 years. Since 1991, I've been using refresh rates of 30.5, 60, 85 and 100 Hz at 1024, 1280 and 1600 horizontal resolutions.
Lately, I've only been at the screen from 5-8 hours/day, but when I have major CAD projects cooking, it's not unusual to spend 10-12 hours staring at the monitor. I don't have any fatigue issues and I'm nearly 43. My prescription hasn't changed in 3 years. I do try to get out in the shop every couple of hours, or out on the road. I guess this helps with the eye strain issue quite a bit.
You might try adjusting your monitor temperature settings for a week or so and see if it helps. However, your photo projects may not lend themselves to changing color saturation and temperatures.
