I keep hearing about racing events that Vipers are involved in but being that I've never been into the whole racing events (other than the local autocross wanna be stuf). Can someone please clue me into what types of races that Vipers participate in? (other than the straight line drags). I keep hearing people talking about race season etc.. is this the SCCA racing? Do people with "teams" race for fun or is it for profit as well?
there are timed events, such as viper days, and groups like green flag, tcra, etc etc.. and some tracks have open tracks where you just show up, pay a fee and pass tech inspection and you can drive on and off the track as often as you would like all day long.. open tracks are not timed, but if you have a hot lap timer or a friend with a stop watch you can time yourself..
being that you're in CA you should hook up with some of the other CA guys.. they are constantly tracking at buttonwillow, willow springs, thunderhill, and i think theres something going on thanksgiving weekend at laguna seca..
viper days is coming up... you should definitely consider it to get your feet wet!
Booking good weekend track dates takes about 2 to 3 years of planning. ViperDays goes to Mid Ohio and VIR which are the closest events to you, City. Both are GREAT tracks and worth a trip. Tracks like Watkins and Limerock are booked way far in advance and getting a good weekend is like getting a rent controlled apt in NY - you almost have ot wait for someone to die
ViperDays will be coming to Daytona in October of next year - although the schedule is not 100% carved in stone yet. I know that's a bit of a hike for you.
Keep lobbying Skip and make sure you can get your fellow New Yorkers to come out and play - local participation is key
OR, plan on doing a VOI next year, ViperDays always does a school in conjunction with the track for VOI.
Roadkill, Cali track days can be found at www.track-days.org , mostly time trials (which is what you want) also some wheel to wheel racing events. Being in Eureka Thunderhill is the closest to you, Viperdays event there in March.
If the track-days.org link doesn't work type it in manually.

The City slickers should be able to relate to the above quote. For NY Jets season tickets, they require you to pay for the priveledge of being put on the waiting list. It also comes with an annual fee to maintain your place on that list.
