Serious Question - How do you convert a regular CD to MP3?
How do you convert a regular CD to MP3? I have a fellow Viper Alley member that is bugging me to add some music by SUN RA KAT to Viper Alley Radio and I don't want to disappoint him.
Thanks in advance.

A lot of mixed reviews on that product - either works, or works but your computer gets messed up, or it crashes your computer, or it generates spam programs.
I'll pass - looks like you get what it cost.

Re: Serious Question - How do you convert a regular CD to MP3?
Just to fill in a few details for you...
On the CD, the tracks are in WAV format. The first step is to transfer the WAV files on the CD to your computer. WAV is an uncompressed format, so the files are quite large - but they are perfect CD quality. The next step is to encode those WAV files as mp3 files. MP3 is a compression algorithm - thus the quality will no longer be as good as the CD. The basis of the algorithm has to do with the fact that the human ear cannot distinguish certain sound patterns - thus they can be removed without too much noticeable effect. Now, all mp3 encoders are not created equal. MP3s encoded with one encoder will sometimes be of better quality than those encoded with another. You also have options as to the bitrate of the mp3 encoding. Higher bitrates give higher quality mp3s, but also yield larger files.
The lame encoder is real good, and use 192k/s as a bitrate.
That said, you'll find some tools that automate the process, from CD-to-mp3, but they are doing the same thing. You can use Winamp to simply redirect the CD tracks to WAV files on your harddrive. Then use an encoder to rip them down to mp3s.

I use "CDRipper2" and it rips all hte files from the cd and converts them all the way down to Mp3 so you don't have to mess with the .wav form. I could send it to you SUN RA if you want it. Or you could search for it at www.download.com

Well if the actual physical burner is broken, you are going to have to buy a new burner or get it fixed. If it is the software causing the problems, I can PM you some solutions.

Thanks, weez - I downloaded it myself, but only because you told me where to look.
Now comes the hard part - figuring out how to use it. So far Musicmatch and CDRipper have both not liked my CD that I'm trying to change to MP3 so I can upload some of it to Viper Alley Radio. My CD plays on every CD player I have, yet...arrrrugh! My brain is full. I better go eat something now. But I must feed my cats first or they will try to take my food away from me. And I want to finish editing my video of CO-ED JRs 2002-2003 tonight so I can sell it for $20 per tape.
BTW - CO-ED JRs 2002-2003 is a tape that I videotaped and edited of young teenagers dressed in skimpy outfits dancing to music and bonding as only young teenagers can do.
BTW#2 - There's a lot of screaming and cavorting for my camera.
BTW#3 - The CO-ED JRs are a middle school dance team that waves pom-poms and dances to recorded music and sometimes performs at halftime at football games. They also call each other "Sissy". There is absolutely nothing porno about them.
BTW#4 - Get that disappointed look off of your face, you pervert!

SUN RA - When you put your CD in the CD-ROM, are all of the tracks showing up in the box? If my memory serves me correctly, all you have to do is check the tracks you want to convert, hit the extract button, and after they are all extracted from the CD onto your computer, hit the "File Converting" tab and have fun. I'll throw a CD in there later on tonight and do it myself if this information doesnt help you out.

Music Match Jukebox is the best by far I've ever used. Like Craig said, the trial version is free. I spend the 20 bucks and upgraded it burns and rips your CD's much faster...

OK - All the tracks showed up in the box. I have no extract button, but I hit the start button and it looks like it's copying tracks. I hit File Converter after the copying was completed and nothing is there. I have tried it with the Output Types set to both wav - Wave Encoder Plugin and mp3 - LameD II MP3 Codec Plugin and nothing was there either time. I also looked both times to the Output Directory, which I set to C:\MyMusic, but nothing was there. I used the standard Sample Rate - Bit Rate - Channel of 44100 - 128 - Stereo.
Does this help you in figuring out what I'm doing wrong?
