Apparently it wasn't too bad. I didn't ride it out---I had to get my mom, grandmother, and fiancee out of town. 15 hours from NOLA to Houston---not fun. My dad is a local official. He rode it out and they even were mobile during parts of the storm and went to my office building which has gensets that run the entire building including A/C. It is right off of Causeway, in the first block south of I-10 and only got 2" of water in the building.
Also, the news is sensationalizing this as press always does. The guys who are climbing up on their roofs were in Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parish which are not encircled by hurricane protection levees and are further south than NO.
The storm surge did not overcome the levees in Jefferson or Orleans parishes---close, with some waves lapping over, but nothing major. There may have been one small breach in New Orleans east, which was quickly repaired.
We dodged a major fucking bullet.
