It is. Abroad people think that folks in the extreme fringes of american society are common. David Duke gets more headlines in Europe than a moderate like Senate MAjority leader Frisk.

People abroad thinks that cops shoot first and ask second (as told by countless movies and TV's about life in america), COPS is seen as a documentary of how life really is in the US and folks like Lois Farrakan are thought of as mainstream.

So don't judge the world based on what's on TV. You'll find that you are seeing an extreme minority and not the true broad based view. This is true of american TV as well, its mostly extreme viewpoints being argued and not really an exchange of ideas or beliefs. Journalists are making stories about themselves and their beliefs instead of objectively reporting on the views of the many. This is seeping into politics globally as well, where extreme polarization, beliefs and allegiancies are more important than pragmatism and focusing on results.
