I used to use WD-40 but after a few weeks the hinges were creaking again. I have used some of that white "lithium grease" with good luck, and the other thing that works VERY well was motorcycle chain wax. You spray it on and it turns into a gooey, slimy waxy substance. It doesnt wash off and the spray seems to sort of work its way into the hinge and lubricate over a longer time than the WD or grease did.
