I have had a few cars that I found the best location to put the tweeters was on the dash, bouncing off the glass. A second set of tweeters knocked down about 6db also sit on the dash, towards the center of the dash and are used as a center channel. I know it goes against conventional wisdom with car audio speaker placement but I have had some great results, particularly in cars with a lot of room between the driver and the windshield. Rather than muddy the soundstage, the speaker placement actually helps widen and define it. You want to make sure that if the tweeters and mids are of a different distance from your ear, that you use a time delay to make everything hit you at the same time. The stereo in my viper is stock now. I upgraded my old viper to McIntosh and MB Quart and it was just silly. I don't want my sports car to be any heavier than it already is and acoustically, you are fighting an uphill battle to make the thing sound good.
