Just cause a beagle showed up at your doorstep does not mean it is a stray. I had a beagle when I was a kid and he continually wandered off and could not find his way home. We would put a lost ad in the paper and someone would call and we would drive across town to pick her up. Dumbest dog we ever owned. Happened over and over and over. Dog finally died at 16 when she was run over by a car while sleeping in the middle of the street.
