Air is a pretty crappy conductor, thats why air in the system could cause heat spikes.
If it was me I would make sure the system was free from air pockets then I'd check the radiator cap and pressure test the system.
Radiator caps and thermostats are cheap things that need to be replaced over time anyhow.
