I read in the paper recently that Bush asked OPEC to increase production. They flatly said "No", and went on to whine about the declining dollar, after all we've done for them. Why did they do that? You have to go back to WW2 to understand it. The ruling Iraqi cleric at the time forged a pact with Hitler that would have guaranteed him and Iraq control of the Middle East and its oil. Hitler and the cleric lost, but the idea remained in the minds of the Iraqi power elite. Saddam wanted to realize that unfulfilled dream. The OPEC countries were afraid of him. He invaded Kuwait, and had plans to invade Saudi Arabia (Edit: And he had tried to conqueer Iran, the second largest producer of oil in OPEC). He held that it was his and Iraq's destiny to have control over the oil in the Middle East.

Enter the Bush family. George H.W. played his cards well. He pushed Saddam back into Iraq but left him in power, and a threat to his neighbors at the protest of many Americans. George W. the son hated Saddam, understandably. He got Saddam out of the way, being the pro-active non forward thinking man that he is. But wait, there's a problem with that. The OPEC countries no longer need us to protect them.

Saddam was a piece of dung, BUT he still had a use. He had a lot of value as a caged lion. Now, we are at the mercy of OPEC because there's no one that can harm them. That's it. Done deal. My opinion?...enforcing the no-fly zones was a better option. We'd have kept OPEC at heel, our grandchildren wouldn't be paying off this war, and many thousands of our greatest men would not have ended up as casualties.
