From what I understands the motor was fine, it was the crap electronics Ford used that was causing issues for the people who ended up having trouble. Navistar far as I know had great reliability from the 6.0 when used with their configuration.
I love the smoothness and power of the new 6.7 Cummins when paired with the 6 speed auto (was mandatory to have the manual trans with the 5.9, the 5.9 and 4 speed auto was a shitty combo when towing or even normal driving), but the 6.7 drinks like a gasser.
I was looking at some new trucks for towing, but I'll stick with an 05/06 6.0, hate the interiors of the last GM trucks, but the Fords overall drive so much tighter and feel so much more solid. Fords got a new diesel being built in house to replace the 6.4, code name Scorpion or something like that I heard?

Matt's comments are similar to your own. He said the 6.0 engine itself wasn't terrible, it was just the electronics. He says the 6.4 is screwed up both ways. Time will tell.
